Description

Of course, 2/3 acre isn't generally considered a farm, but that's what our old place was to us, and we'd love to sell our old house as a farm/farmstead, if anyone is interested in using it for that. It served us very well as a starter farm, and we left a lot behind: lots of blueberry bushes, apples, lots of raspberries (3 different varieties), asparagus, rhubarb, bunch grapes, muscadines, herbs, figs, serviceberries, pawpaws, etc., a lot of which is really just coming into production. Altogether we had about 1/3 acre (half the property) in garden crops, i.e. tilled. It's definitely clay soil, but as all the neighbors will tell you, it's good ground, all the more with additions of organic matter/mulch. Most of the garden space gets full sun, except for afternoon shade at the bottom end. We kept a goat there for a short time, as many as 90 beehives for longer than we probably should have, shitake logs in the woods behind the garden, and a peak of 75 chickens with moveable electric netting.

Another big attribute of our last place as a farm was the support and generosity of our neighbors. Neighbors that live on the Yadkin River, just a mile away let us use an outstanding garden spot in the river bottom, wonderful, rich soil, with quite a lot of sand. We grew another 1/4 acre or so of vegetables there. Neighbors about a mile in the opposite direction offered, right before we bought our new place, to buy a dairy cow, provide it a barn and pasture and feed, etc., and let us keep/sell/take practically all the milk if we'd just do the milking and let them have a little. Many neighbors were really very good to us.

The house is a solid, little house, in good condition. It's 1100 sq ft, 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, with a full unfinished basement. It has woods floors. It has a stucco exterior. The roof was replaced about six years ago, just a year or two before we bought the place. We added a woodstove in the basement and there's a Monitor heater upstairs. It was built in 1950. We added a dishwasher to the kitchen.

The house is in eastern Wilkes County, just north of Ronda, about 7 miles west of Elkin, about 15-20 miles (guessinig) east of North Wilkesboro.
